During this autumn season, I find myself drifting back into memories of the gold-gilded mirror perched in the window adjacent to where I slept as a child. I also remember the cherry tree outside. A splendid cherry tree! Each spring, it would uniquely enchant the room with the glow of pink blossoms that matched the walls.
The mirror itself wasn’t anything expensive, just a simple square object with partially peeled gold leaf on its edges. It was a vanity piece from a different era that I found while shopping with my mother for hidden treasures.
And what a treasure I found!
It was magical! In that mirror, I stared at myself on end, as I reflected on my own image as the seasons changed.
Spring brought pink flowers and renewal and joy, summer brought yellow sunshine and verdant foliage, autumn brought harvest before the process of death and renewal experienced as winter.
And so did I, and so did the contours of my life. The parallel was obvious!
When we find ourselves feeling “stuck” emotionally, that’s a signal that it’s time to look in the mirror and examine how well we have been able to adjust to the seasons of our lives.
When we feel “off” that’s a signal to be more reflective and introspective.
So, go look in that mirror! Because there you will find a reflection of the flowing seasons of life.
And you will find peace.
